Oldie, but Goodies
- Here is a link if your family is interested in looking at what type of questions/format there will be for the Forward standardized testing in April WI Forward Practice Tests
- Thinking ahead.....Tuesday, April 7th/Wednesday, April 8th/Thursday, April 9th are going to be Forward Testing days for the 5th grade. PLEASE try to have your child to school on time, eat a hearty breakfast and avoid making any appointments on those days. Thank you!!
Math
- This week we started Unit 6 in the Bridges Curriculum. This unit will be focused on graphing, geometry and volume. (Yes! Volume again!)
- March Number Corner will focus on finding area of rectangles with dimensions expressed in decimal form. In addition, we will conduct an experiment with pencils where we measure our math pencils every week, collect the data, sort the data on a scatter plot and then analyze what we collected and look for patterns. Finally, we will continue to practice our division skills through some games.
- April Number Corner will focus on volume, decimals and fraction relationships and story problems involving each of these concepts.
Literacy this week
- This week we continued our work in Module 3 of EL titled-- Athlete Leaders of Social Change.
- We are reading a non-fiction text called Promises to Keep by Sharon Robinson. She is the daughter of Jackie Robinson and we will learn a lot about his personal and professional history and his journey to become an inspirational athlete for social change.
- In this unit we focusing on thinking about factors that helped Jackie Robinson becoming a leader for social change.
- We will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read.
- In addition.....your 5th grader will be writing a LOT MORE in this module. Be prepared for possible whining and complaining. It is a lot, but it is important work. Their skills and confidence in writing summaries will jump a significant amount :)
- For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.
- Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well! Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Science --Patterns of Earth and Sky
Our third unit in science will be: Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
Why do we see different stars at different times?
- Our first chapter will focus on : Why don't we see a lot of stars in the daytime?
