Oldie, but Goodies
- Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
A quick reminder as the weather gets colder: Please ensure your fifth grader is sent to school each day with appropriate winter clothing (boots, coat, hat, gloves/mittens, etc.) for outside recess. Our recess is 25 minutes long and there is not an option for students to stay indoors. If your child plans to go on the snow mounds or sledding hill they MUST be in full winter gear including snow pants.
We want all students to stay warm and enjoy their time outdoors.

Math
- This week we reviewed and assessed Modules 1-3 of Unit 3. We also took the Bridges Interim Assessment #1.
- Next week (right before Winter Break) we will do some work around and assess on our division work. We will also take a math screener called FastTrack Math.
- After Winter Break, we will begin Unit 4 which will be on Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals.
- December Number Corner will focus on classifying quadrilaterals based on their sides and angles. In addition, we will be gathering data on our heights and feet lengths. With this data we will be creating line plots and a scatter plot.
- January Number Corner will focus on numerical patterns and graphs. Along with this, we will be using multiplication of fractions to help us keep a running total of time and money.
Literacy this week
- This week we began Module 2 of EL. We will be reading a narrative non-fiction text called The Most Beautiful Roof in World by Kathryn Lasky.
- We will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read.
- For this first unit, we will be looking at various non-fiction formats and using them to guide our understanding and personal writing when we summarize information.
- This week we worked on some class and individual summaries. Our plan is to finish Unit 1 of this Module before we leave for Winter Break.
- For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.
- Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well! Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Science --Ecosystem Restoration
Our second unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question:
How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?
- Our first chapter will focus on : Why aren't the jaguars and sloths growing and thriving?
- Our second chapter will focus on : Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?
