  • Don't forget!  No school on Monday, January 19th in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr Day.

Antiguos, pero Relevantes  

  • Friday, February 13th we will be having an Author's Tea in our 5th grade classrooms.  For Black History Month, 5th graders will be reading books written by African American authors during our social studies time during the weeks of January 26-February 12th.  Students will be asked to summarize what they have read and then share out to their classmates during our Author's Tea on Friday, February 13th.  We are asking families to sign up to send in treats for this tea.  A sign-up will be shared with families soon.  Thank you in advance!

  • Valentine's Day will ALSO be recognized in our classrooms osn Friday, February 13th.  It is OPTIONAL if your kiddo would like to pass out valentines.  Our only request is that if they do bring valentines to pass out, they must have one for everyone in the classroom.  Your 5th grader's teacher will send home a classlist. 

Matemáticas

  • Esta semana comenzamos la Unidad 4. Nos centraremos en la multiplicación y división de números enteros y decimales.

  • Esta semana repasamos y practicamos algunas estrategias de multiplicación y comenzamos a explorar el camino hacia el uso del algoritmo como la estrategia más eficiente. ¡Las tablas de proporciones fueron una parte fundamental de nuestra semana!

  • Esquina Numérica de enero, nos centraremos en patrones numéricos y gráficos. Asimismo, utilizaremos la multiplicación de fracciones para llevar un registro continuo del tiempo y el dinero.

Literatura/Alfabetismo de esta semana

  • ¡Esta semana terminamos nuestros proyectos sobre animales! Pregúntenle a su estudiante qué parte fue la más difícil y cuál fue su parte favorita.

  • La próxima semana retomaremos las clases de EL.

  • Estamos leyendo un texto narrativo de no ficción llamado The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn Lasky. (El Techo más Hermoso del Mundo de Kathryn Lasky)

  • Continuaremos trabajando en hablar y escribir sobre lo que leemos.  

  • Para nuestra próxima unidad, realizaremos una investigación sobre un animal de la selva tropical y escribiremos un ensayo basado en lo aprendido.

Ciencia – Restauración del Ecosistema ¡Lo terminaremos la próxima semana!

Nuestra segunda unidad será sobre Modelado de la Materia mientras respondemos la pregunta:

¿Cómo obtienen los organismos de un ecosistema la materia y la energía que necesitan para crecer y prosperar?

  • El primer capítulo se enfocará en: ¿Por qué los jaguares y los perezosos no crecen ni prosperan?

  • Nuestro segundo capítulo se centrará en la siguiente pregunta: ¿Por qué los árboles de Guarumo/Yarumo no crecen ni se desarrollan adecuadamente?


Ciencias Sociales - Mes de la Historia Afroamericana

  • La próxima semana, los estudiantes seleccionarán un libro para leer en pareja o en grupo. Podrán elegir entre varios títulos disponibles en la biblioteca de Randall, escritos por autores afroamericanos. Luego, durante las semanas del 26 de enero al 13 de febrero, dedicaremos el tiempo de ciencias sociales para que los estudiantes disfruten de estos libros tan interesantes y bellamente escritos. También se les pedirá que resuman lo que lean y lo compartan durante nuestro té literario el viernes 13 de febrero.     Math
    • We began Unit 4 this week.  We will be focusing on Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals.
    • This week we revisited and practiced some multiplication strategies and started to look at the path to using the algorithm for the most efficient strategy. Ratio tables were a BIG part of our week!
    • January Number Corner will focus on numerical patterns and graphs.  Along with this, we will be using multiplication of fractions to help us keep a running total of time and money. 
    Literacy this week
    • This week we finished our Animal Projects!  Ask your 5th grader what part was the most challenging and what was their favorite part.
    • Next week we will jump back into EL lessons.
    • We are reading a narrative non-fiction text called The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn Lasky. 
    • We will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read.  
    • For our next unit, we will be doing some non-fiction research on a rainforest animal and writing an essay based on our learning. 
    • For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.  
    • Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well!  Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.


    Science --Ecosystem Restoration--We will finish this next week!
    Our second unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question:
    How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?
    • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why aren't the jaguars and sloths growing and thriving?
    • Our second chapter will focus on :  Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?
    • Our third chapter will focus on :  Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving in the soil?
    Social Studies--Black History Month 
    • Next week, students will select a book to read with a partner(s).  They will choose from some titles we have here at Randall that were written by African American authors.  Then, during the weeks of January 26-February 13th, we will be using our science/social studies time for students to just enjoy these rich and beautifully written books.  They will also be asked to summarize and then share what they read during our Author's Tea on Friday, February 13th.  (A sign up will be shared with you soon for families to provide drinks/treats.)

    Class List for Valentine's

     

    Please note: Valentines should be for all students. We do have a peanut free rule for any snacks. If you produce any treats please make sure we have an ingredients list and that they are ALL individually packaged for easy transport home. We will pass our Valentines on Friday, February 13, the same day as our Author's Tea.
