Oldie, but Goodies
Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class continued to work with volume, multiplication strategies using ratio tables and partial products.
  • We continued our work with writing and solving numerical expressions.
  • We reviewed and assessed the first three units in Module 1.
  • Next week we will do some introduction of division strategies and do a quick assessment.  Division is a concept that will continue to reappear throughout the year.  We will focusing more on division in the second semester. 
  • Our Number Corner this month will focus on making connections between numbers written as fractions and decimals and start our work with volume in tangible and strategic ways. 
Literacy this week
  • We are continuing to work through Module 1/Unit 1. 
  • The texts we will be using are Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and an abridged version of  the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 
  • We will be focusing on finding the gist of the text and expressing our learning in verbal and written communication.
  • This week we focused on looking closely at and summarizing various articles in the UDHR in a paragraph format. 
  • We continued to follow Esperanza's story as her and her family fled Mexico to the United States.  Ask your 5th grader to tell you about the story.
  • For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.  
  • Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well!  Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Science 
  • Our first unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?

  • Students will need headphones and a computer mouse at school.  Please send this in as soon as you can--Thanks! 
  • We sent home a Digital Device Agreement with your 5th grader.  Please make sure this is signed and returned to school asap. Thanks!
  • If you know throughout the year that you will be gone on vacation, you will need to fill out this absence in Infinite Campus.  IN ADDITION, please let us know so that we are also in the know.  Thanks!
  • Here is our shameless plea to all parents/guardians.  We don't take many field trips during the year, but if things come up at the last minute and for the end of the year all day trip we really count on parents joining us.  If you think you might even consider this, please do the volunteer training now so we are not scrambling at the last minute. The training is good for only one year.  After that, you do need to re-apply, but it is a simple process after the first round of training.  Thank you!!  Volunteering Link
